You Probably Know Grey Towers — But the Pinchots Are All Over Milford
October 19, 2026
If you've spent any time around Milford, you've probably heard of Grey Towers, the former home of Gifford Pinchot, America's first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service and twice governor of Pennsylvania.
But the Pinchot family's connection to Milford goes well beyond the mansion.
The family arrived in Milford in the early 1800s, and over the generations their influence became woven into the town itself. In fact, a self-guided Pinchot Family & Milford walking tour identifies 15 sites around town that were built by or associated with members of the family.
One of the most recognizable is Forest Hall on Broad Street. The building was funded by the Pinchot family and originally provided space for the summer program of the Yale School of Forestry.
So the next time you're walking through Milford, take another look at some of the buildings around you. Grey Towers may be the best-known part of the Pinchot story, but pieces of that history are scattered throughout town.
